Born, December 1939 in Essen, Germany.
Grew up in rural Saarland (St. Wendel), an independent country under the
control of France after W.W.II. (The Saarland returned to Germany in 1957). Attended eight
years elementary school, in a French education system, with German as first language.
In 1953, at age 13 entered the workforce as stockroom boy with
multinational electrical manufacturer BBC (now Swedish-Swiss multinational ABB), in
Saarbruecken.
In 1954, entered industrial electrician apprenticeship program with the
same company. At the same time, attended vocational school for 3 1/2 years. Completed the
apprenticeship program in 1958, with the same company in Cologne (the family moved back to
Cologne in 1957) as certified journeyman industrial electrician.
- From 1958-1960, worked as electrician in industry, in production, construction and
maintenance, in housing construction, customer service, and with the city of Cologne
maintenance department.
In 1960, joined the German Air Force, for 4 1/2 years, working in air
traffic control, in a NATO sector operation centre, honorable discharge in 1964 with the rank
of sergeant.
November 1965, moved to Canada. From 1965 to 1970 worked in
logging in Northern British Columbia, electrical manufacturing and housing construction in
Vancouver, potash mine construction in Saskatchewan, and traveled extensively in Canada,
US, Mexico and Europe.
In 1970, returned to school at Vancouver City College (Vancouver, B.C.).
Supported studies through driving taxi for five years. After one year in science (physics,
chemistry, mathematics, calculus, algebra, geometry) switched to arts and social sciences
(English (composition, drama and poetry), anthropology, sociology, political science and
philosophy). In 1973 transferred to third year undergraduate studies at Simon Fraser
University (Vancouver, B.C.), taking philosophy (morals, ethics, logic, epistemology and
philosophy of science), anthropology, sociology, political science, German, French and
Spanish. Graduated in 1975, with a B.A. (Hons.) in political science.
In 1975, entered M.A. program in political science also at Simon Fraser
University. Graduated in 1977, with a M.A. in international relations.
In 1977, joined the Ph.D. program at the Department of Political
Science, Carleton University, Ottawa. In 1978, attended eight-week summer program in
statistical analysis at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and in 1979 attended four-week
summer program in research methods and statistical analysis at Essex University,
Colchester, England. Graduated in 1988, with a Ph.D. in political economy.
Teaching Assistant, Simon Fraser University
(1975-1977) and Carleton University (1977-1981). Freelance
Correspondent, Germany, for the Financial Post (1981-1982.
Researcher/translator, DND/SSHRC/Carleton University Project, Bonn,
Germany (1981-82), and the Commission on the Economic Union and
Development Prospects for Canada Project (1984). Lecturer,
University of Ottawa (1984), Carleton University (1983-1985),
Volkshochschule, Bonn, Germany (1982). Professor, Political Science,
St. Francis Xavier University (1985-87). Acting Director,
Alternative News Indices Project, Centre for Communication, Culture
and Society, Carleton University (1988-89). Consultant,
International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and Canadian
International Development Agency (CIDA) (1989-1990).
