The
Institute for Human Conceptual and Mental Development (IHCMD) is an independent,
non-profit organization. It was set up in 1990 to facilitate independent research and
study. It was to investigate the common human causes that lie behind persisting and
growing cultural, religious, racial, political, social, economic, human individual and
environmental problems, difficulties and crises we face and we create as a species
globally today. Going beyond symptoms and consequences to understand the deeper-rooted
problems, causes and developments that lie behind them. In turn, to understand the nature
and direction of the answers and solutions, the direction and steps toward a sustainable,
equitable, secure and peaceful future.
It
involved questioning the fundamentals and essentials of how traditionally throughout the
ages and today we understand and manage human existence and development. It required
critically questioning traditional socio-cultural beliefs, views, values, conventions and
practices. Such fundamental questioning could not take place within academia and the
prevailing paradigm. Questioning the fundamentals and essentials of how we understand and
manage human existence and development was not possible within existing organizational and
institutional structures. It required an independent institutional setting to consider and
discuss the issues beyond the pressure to conform to conventional wisdom and established
practices.
The
central questions that guided the research and study were: What about us human beings is
it that makes us understand and manage our existence and development in the harmful,
destructive and counterproductive ways we do? How as a species in our self-development and
growth did we get to where we find ourselves today and the problems, difficulties and
crises we create? How did we get to understand and manage existence and development in the
way we do? On what understanding do we act, and how is this understanding developed? What
is the direction of the answers and solutions, the direction and steps we need to take
in our own human development and growth to understand and manage existence and
development in sustainable, equitable, secure and peaceful ways?
